Kavi Kokil Vidyapati Bust Sculpture
Kavi Kokil Vidyapati a tresured poet of Mithila and as well as of eastern literary traditions.
He is a household name in Mithila. His songs sung at different rituals and traditional fiestas in the region.
Vidyapati was a member of the court of the kings Dev Singh and Shiv Singh. He wrote the great long poem Kirtilata for Shiv Singh's grandfather Kirti Singh, Bhumiparikrama for Dev Singh.The golden period of his literary works was between 1380 to 1406. During this period he wrote in Sanskrit, Avabhatta and mostly in Maithili.
All major Bengali poets Chaitanya, Chandidas etc of the medieval period and Rabindra Nath Tagore of modern period enfluenced by Vidyapati.
He has been called the "Father of Bengali Literature".
Vidyapati's influence reached Odisha through Bengal.
